The English Department is the most happening Dept. of the College. It caters to all three streams of Arts, Science and Commerce. It runs both under-graduate and post-graduate programs. The highly qualified faculty comprises 6 regular teachers (4 Ph.D.s) and 1 on a no-grant basis.
The mission of the Dept. is to enrich students with 21st century graduate attributes to enable them to face the challenges of a globalized world. It carries out a host of student-centric activities aimed at developing life skills along with academic excellence in students.
The department PG course, one of the best in Nagpur University, offers specialization in Critical Theory, Film Studies etc.. Talks by visiting faculty and student symposiums are a regular feature. In addition to the university prescribed curriculum, the Dept. offers a clutch of add-on courses for career advancement of students. These include ‘Campus to Corporate’ course certified by Tata Consultancy Services, Bangalore, and a course on Communication Skills and Personality Development. Students can choose Communicative English, a UGC recognized vocational course that prepares students for exciting careers in the media and advertising industry, tourism and hospitality sector, BPOs and KPOs, teaching etc.
Students of the Dept. regularly bag merit positions in the university examination. They also get selected in premier institutions like JNU, Delhi University, Xaviers, Symbiosis Institute of Mass Communication, Asian College of Journalism and in international universities for higher studies. The Hislop English Literary Association provides a platform for students to showcase their talents in debating, elocution, dramatics and quizzing. Its students bring out ‘The Hislopian’, the College Annual Magazine and ‘Hislop Times’, a newsletter.
